The Growing Problem of NEETs: A Global Perspective

Introduction

NEET is an acronym that stands for "Not in Employment, Education, or Training." It refers to young people who are not engaged in any form of employment, education, or training. NEETs are often at risk of social exclusion and economic disadvantage.

France: A Case Study

In 2019, 129 out of 1000 young people aged 15-29 in France were NEETs. Of these, 61% were unemployed and 26% were not in employment, education, or training (WEB). In 2021, the number of NEETs in France remained high, with 128 out of 1000 young people aged 15-29 not engaged in employment, education, or training (WEB).

Global Trends

In 2023, one in five young people worldwide, or 20.4% of the global youth population, were NEETs (WEB). Two-thirds of these NEETs were women (WEB). The number of young people who are not in employment but are also not engaged in education or training is growing globally (WEB).

Causes of NEET

There are a number of factors that can contribute to NEET, including:

  • Lack of job opportunities
  • Lack of access to education and training
  • Social and cultural factors
  • Personal factors (such as mental health issues or disabilities)

Consequences of NEET
