Syracuse-Area Students Plan Walkout for School Violence Awareness
Cicero-North Syracuse High Schoolers Plan Walkout
When and Where
Students will depart the commons at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at 9:00 AM on Thursday, September 14 to walk approximately 12 blocks to nearby Gillette Road Middle School.
Why Are They Walking?
According to the walkout organizers, the event is a "direct response to school shootings and violence across the country," and they hope to "bring awareness to the issue and hopefully stop gun violence from happening."
The walkout is part of a nationwide movement of school walkouts in response to a series of mass shootings in the United States, including the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.
Organizers, Speakers, Activities
The student-led walkout is being organized by three juniors: Jack Moore, Claire Fletcher, and Jonah Villa.
Speakers will include local clergy, elected officials, student leaders, and parents.
Participants will hold signs with messages such as "Books Not Bullets" and "Protect Our Kids."
Support from School Administration
According to a letter sent to parents, the school administration supports the walkout and believes it is a "powerful way for students to express their views on an important issue."
The school will provide supervision for students during the walkout.
What Can You Do to Help?
